Radical Optimism
This is an illustrated version of a TED talk (ua-cam.com/video/FrqBWQ-mVEc/v-deo.html) I did about why we should be as optimistic as we possibly can. The audio is the first part of my talk and the video has been assembled from stock footage.

An Ode to Otherness - and Vanishing Asia
Переглядів 1,4 тис.3 роки тому
The poet Jason Silva feeds his soul with the “otherness” of travel. He was inspired by the book Vanishing Asia to celebrate the wildly diverse world it captures, and to encourage how this otherness can move our spirits. Jason offers this ode as an unsolicited gift to lift us out of our chairs.

I left for Asia 40 years ago to photograph the disappearing traditions of the continent. I spent the next 40 years traveling to 35 countries in Asia, going to the end of the road, and now I have compiled my best 9,000 images into a huge book called Vanishing Asia. You can read more about it at this Kickstarter, www.kickstarter.com/projects/kk-org/vanishing-asia

The Future of Intellectual Property
Переглядів 2,8 тис.3 роки тому
Intellectual property is a major global commodity more valuable than material economic inputs. For a long time, the protections for this resource were managed by individual countries, but this patchwork system is straining under the complexity of global consumption and creation, plus burgeoning volume. In the next decade or two, we should expect to see a substantial shift toward a truly global ...
The Future of Global Convergence
Переглядів 1,5 тис.3 роки тому
The idea of global convergence is that humanity, over the next 25 years, is headed toward unity. In this talk, I will outline the ways this convergence is unfolding across six broad domains of human experience: platform, economy, climate, curriculum, science, and culture. In each of these areas, there are regional distinctions, subgroup specifics, carveouts for special interests, but on the who...
The Future of Space
Переглядів 9413 роки тому
For most of its history, the space industry has been funded by governments, but now it is undergoing a renaissance because of investment from private enterprise. Much of this is coming from Silicon Valley, using the principles of agile design and manufacturing to bring a new era of space technology. There are two promising economic models for growing development in space right now, and neither ...
The Future of Fabrication
Переглядів 9723 роки тому
Manufacturing and fabrication often evokes visions of endless conveyor belts of things made at large sale. For many things, this is indeed the way they are made, it is efficient, and this approach will largely continue. But increasingly we are also making small batches of things. This drive toward one-of manufacturing is fed no only by the desire for personalization, but also by efforts to unco...
The Future of Fintech
Переглядів 2,5 тис.3 роки тому
Finance and money are, essentially, a type of communication. As such, they are experiencing a huge amount of change. With our smart phones behaving more and more like financial devices, money is acting more and more like bits, sent and received as easily as a text message. The first and most common impact we're seeing is the arrival of the cashless society. This relatively minor change for indi...

BillG was right that in the next 5 years online media didn’t make much revenue. But the interviewers were right that in 10 years ads and internet portals would dominate.

Good to get Bill Gates' strategic direction. Good insights.
I'm back once again, this time 9 months later, for some much needed wisdom yet again. I've only realized that most of my philosophies and moral codes come straight from this video. I've only just realized how much of an effect it has had on me. Thank you once again, Kevin. I'll probably be back in a few months again to remind myself what truly matters in life.
I want to drink what he is having 😅

This is my first encounter with Kevin Kelly. I strongly disagree with the cosmological/metaphysical assumptions and with most of the conclusions drawn here. Nonetheless, I respect his thought for the large-scale ambition and for not falling into the trap of romanticism and/or technophobia, which we have almost everywhere nowadays, one way or another. He seems like a nice guy one could have a beer with. Cheers!
It's obviously wrong from any reasonable philosophical standpoint, as it basically says that (1) there's teleology in evolution (a goal), which is precisely what 100% of all theoretical biologists discarded with the new synthesis (1930) and (2) it assumes that technology evolves as organisms, which is another very basic conceptual error, as organisms are being driven by the selection of variants generated by random mutations, whereas no one creates tech randomly, including several defective pieces just to have it eliminated in some sort of competition (e.g., markets). The author sounds as a child trying to articulate concepts that he doesn't understand. Still, it's very creative and, for that reason, I like it! Much better than someone that knows all these things that I'm formulating, but is incapable of having an original idea.
so gooood. felt like an advice i very much needed from my fun granddad. light up my morning. this will be in my morning ritual from now on.
Bill gates sir❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I love how dead wrong bill was here. Wish he could make a reaction video on this
8:15 Actually there is a misconception that China invests mainly in hardware and not in software. Chinese IT is quite well-developed and it has garnered widespread adoption within its borders. When I lived in China for 2 years (2020-2022), I was surprised to see how digitalized the economy was (much more digitalized than Canada, where I am from), Payments are largely done through Wechat or Zhihubao QR code scans. These superapps connect you to ridesharing and food ordering services. Search engines and video sharing platforms are easy to use. What I found most astounding is that the larger hospitals are fully automated with kiosks where you can print your reports as long as you bring your hospital card. Larger hotels and restaurants even got the service robots that talk to you! The Chinese populace embraces 5G and AI technology more readily than the developed West.
If I heard it correctly, the Wired editors said content club revenues would be at ~$4B/year revenue by the year 2000. Netflix reached that figure at around 2012/13. They overestimated by over a decade 😬😆

Hi, KK! Do you know? Do you know how funny it is? I bought your book, yes, the latest one called "The Book of Answers" (of course, I also bought your other 6 books, haha). Do you know why I call it "The Book of Answers"? I have to share this funny moment with you. It's when every time I'm troubled by a problem, I randomly open it (yes, unintentionally!). For example, I casually brought it from the bedroom to the living room and opened it, and it says "Exercise + Diverse Diet = Health" - I really burst out laughing. How did you know that I secretly ate durian, delicious Jiangxi rice noodles, and tasty taro milk last night? Hahaha, are you watching me from the other end of the universe? Well, I will exercise and prepare a variety of food for myself right after I send you this message, okay? Haha, hey, wink and smile at you! Thank you, cute old man.

Creepy guy
Chinese people being colonized is a humiliation that they will never forget. India is still a proud British Commonwealth.
INDIA IS - [ 4 decades behind China ] - I had an apportunity to go to China in 1972 to assist in the implementation of a computer system
“No content club will do 4 billion in revenue in my life time.” lol Disney+ made $7.42 Billion in revenue in 2022. Look how times change.
Then how they nose-dived off a cliff with all films in 2023 bombing and being slammed for forcing political agendas down our throats at the cinema… So that $7.42 billion was not well spent, it was lost. Real shame, that real shame. Not.
love this talk, thanks Kevin
Sorry professor your are decades behind on China and India, please study Jayant Bhandari

Id appreciate if usa create financial prosperity 1% more compare to their debt. This is what technology wants
Loved the ethics section - it definitely is a human problem to come up with the ethics we embed. Also loved the perspective on how roads, cities and technology will change to facilitate the self-driving vehicles. What do you think about your original timeline of 15-20-50 years with companies like Cruise and Waymo rolled out in several cities driving average roads? It seems like this is coming much more quickly.
I got a lot out of this, thanks amish cool dude
Disappointing to see you take funds from a Chinese entity. #UyghurGenocide #FreeHongKong #TaiwanIsACountry
